Too salty

by Holly
(PA)

Hello!

I made vegetable beef soup and it is too salty. I think I remember hearing, or reading, that if I place a potato in the soup it will absorb the salt. Is this true? Please help!

Thank You,
Holly

Soup Tips
by: Grandma

Hi Holly,

Yes, you already know the answer. Just scrub a potato and quarter it, add a piece at a time. Just drop it into the soup for a few minutes and swirl it around, then discard it. Taste your soup after removing the potato and if you need to remove more salt add another quarter, keep doing this until the salt taste is where you want it.

More tips: When cooking soup it's usually best to wait until the soup is almost done before adding salt and pepper. The seasons tend to get stronger while cooking.

Most soups are best if you cook a day before you want to serve it. The flavor is blended and the broth is thickened.

You can keep your soup hot longer if you warm the bowls first.
