Remedy for Moths and Softening Clothes

by Ger Walsh
(Ireland)

Hi Grandma, I live in Ireland in a very hard water area and Ive noticed stains on my washing - white stains on my colours like mild bleach, washing and being careful is 'my thing' so it aint something I'm doing and also MOTHS making holes in my clothes - mostly cotton types. Any advice? Thanks

Moths and Laundry Tip
by: Grandma

Hello Ger,

I'm very sorry it took so long to get back to you, I was on vacation for 5 days meeting old friends I haven't seen in 30 to 50 years.

As far as the moths I'd try getting some essential oil of cedar and putting a few drops on pieces of cloth, like a hanky and placing it in closets and dresser drawers or anywhere you store your cloths. You can also use herbs to chase them away, like pennyroyal, sage, wormwood, lavender or mint. The moths don't eat the cloths, it's the larvae, so check where they are laying their eggs and try letting them hang in the sunshine for a few hours then shake them off.

For your cloths, no doubt you're dealing with really hard water and chemicals. I'd suggest you try adding 1 1/2 cups of white vinegar to your rinse cycle.

PS Visiting Ireland is on my bucket list!
