Remedy for Coughs

It was an old recipe dating back in the 1920's. It was given for croup but when I
had bronchitis, and a bad cough I figured I would try it.

It may not sound so tasty, but believe me it's not as bad as it sounds.

The recipe said to slice an onion and sprinkle brown sugar on it, and when the juices were done mixing with the brown sugar, you spoon it off and take it for your cough.

When I had bronchitis I felt too lousy to do it that way, so I just sliced up an onion into a jar and dumped some brown sugar in and stirred it up. Worked fine.

Taken by the teaspoons, it is creamy and smooth going down the throat and eases the cough.

Onions and Brown Sugar
by: Peggy

I remember this remedy well and was actually looking for it when I came across this site. However, I think my grandma use to stew the onions and then put the brown sugar in it. She also use to soak an egg in a bottle of red vinegar with brown sugar and when the egg was cooked by the vinegar she would beat it up with the egg beater and store it in a jar and give us a couple of tablespoonfuls when we got sick. Boy, those were the days.

Onion and Brown Sugar Cough Remedy
by: Grandma

Hi Kathy,

Wow, I've never heard of this cough remedy. I think it would be especially helpful for children since we have to be so careful of what we give them these days. I think we might have to be a bit sneaky though and not tell them about the onion..lol. I'm sure the brown sugar would cover the onion flavor up quite nice. I do know that onions have a natural antibiotic in them so we would not only get a really good cough soother but also a natural dose of antibiotics.

Thank you so much for your helpful home remedy,

Grandma
