Medicinal Herbs & When to Harvest

Hello Grandma, I am following your site, and trying my hand at herbal remedies. I have planted a small herb garden early in April, and am wondering how and when to harvest my herbs, to use to make tinctures? Any info you could pass along to me would be much appreciated! Thanks so much, love your site!

Hello Shauna,

I'm so happy that you found my website and you are enjoying exploring it. As far as harvesting herbs, every herb is different. Some you harvest before they flower, like for instance dandelion. Dandelion is a wonderful herb, but if you're going to make a salad with it you have to catch it before it flowers or it's really bitter. But, the flowers and the root are good for other things. My advice is to invest in a really good medicinal herb book and study each one you are interested in growing and using for medicinal purposes. This type of book you'll never regret investing in.

In the future I hope to list many more herbs and when and how to harvest them and of course their medicinal uses. But, like most people, life has a way of sucking up my spare time. Hopefully, I will find some time in the near future to do what I have planned.
