Itchy, Stinging Skin from Bad Nerves

Hello,

When my nerves are shot, I get insomnia because my skin feels like its stinging and itching. I have prescription medicine but it makes me too drowsy. Is there anything that you're aware of that can help me? Herbal products like valerian, etc.,aren't strong enough. Even over-the-counter Benadryl doesn't help. I'll try anything you suggest.

stinging burning arms scalp and legs NEW
by: tanja

Hi all, i have gotten some weird comfort to know i am not the only one with these symptoms. When u have exhausted yourself trying everything and anything and found doctors both western and alternative to not give concrete answers you end up on a website blog, crying me too! Me too!
I am in the similar age bracket 55 with post menopausal onset of symptoms. However low neutrophils and inflammation seem to be linked. I have led a healthy life believe insupplements and natural cures. But wading thru the overload of info has me more confused and still in pain.
I just want to read that there is one person on this site who says now i,m cured because i found. ?... To work. Anybody?
My empathy goes out to all who like me

MENOPAUSE
by: SNOWFLAKE

Well its been awhile since i posted. I havnt had a period now in almost 2 years (next month)
Most of my really bad stuff was the first year..stinging ,burning skin amongst a slew of other stuff to the point where i actually thought i was gonna die (litrally) Well i'm still here thankfully and although i cant say with certainty it was menopause, its really all i can put it down to as i had just about every test the Docs could think of and the only thing "off" was my FSH level. I still have some stuff going on,but its kinda in the background and i dont think about it much or let it get in the way of life.I figure at some point it will all stop or it will just continue as it is and thats actually managable.
I hope this helps some of you ladies having the same kinds of problems and are in Peri or Meno.

I am 53 and haven't had a period since April. I have itchy/stingy skin on my hands, forearms, feet and ankles. I have no rash. After I have scratched like crazy I make myself bleed and have scabs. Haven't been to the Doctor yet. Is it likely to be a hormonal thing then? So Yams, Lemon Balm tea and B12?

My itchy arms
by: Anonymous

I have itchy arms that feel like red ants are crawling all over. This condition happens every fall and last for 2-3 months. I tried everything from hydrocortosone to benadryl with litle to no success. I have found that ice packs help tremendously and have used them to get to sleep at night. It appears that the itching worsens as I become stressed. I also found that covering my arms from the sun helps as well. I only wish I knew how to completely eliminate it or reduce its occurance.

I am going on 2 years with this skin stuff, have been to 2 dermatologists, an allergist, n a doc n Birmingham AL they all said it's hives. Watch what I eat, take over the counter stuff. I am so tired of this mess, right now today it's as bad as it's been, all day yesterday, all night, today, I am about to lose my mind. I have big red swollen itching knots around my face back of my neck, my arms, hands, legs, have large welts, the itching, stinging is awful, taken the zyrtec, benadryl, this time nothing is working,I look like a freak with a skin disease. I feel sick to my stomach from putting up with this stuff. There has got to be a doctor r somebody that can cure this mess, please does anyone know of anything?

This stinging and itching on my arms is torture . A dermotologist gave me a steriod shot and some ointment. I had gotten a shot a few weeks ago but it is not helping this time. It is called eczema nummular and sometimes I could scream . I am 51 and am probably going through the change but this has been going on for several years. Also the doctor told me to take tagamet because it had something in it to help itching Maybe I will try this again.

Just read this blog about prickly, itchy skin, with menopause symptoms at 54 years young - sounded just like me. I felt as though I was reading my medical symptoms throughout. I've been in menopause 3 yrs. with hot flashes and sensitive to cold. Taking a multivitamin, calcium, B12, glucosamine chondroitin, cranberry pill to control pH, fish oil and a baby aspirin daily. My recent thryoid count is twice what it should be - a definite surprise. Tried the vinegar/honey treatment but gave me heartburn - any suggestions? Not giving up on it yet. Will try the Neutrogena lotion and yams and try to find the lemon balm tea.
Thank you for providing natural and healthy alternatives to my symptoms.

stinging skin
by: melanie

Its actually all over...mostly in my feet and legs but can be in my arms.So not where i had the sinus surgery at all. This is why i,m not sure if its the B12 deficiency or its hormonal as i,m going through Menopause and was having some symptoms before i had the surgery.I remember going to the OBGYN in Febuary and almost crying for some kind of relief.I have tried Prempro but it didnt make me feel to great so i stopped it. So i,m really unsure what is wrong.I do feel beter than i did for sure but the tingling and pin prick type sensations can get pretty bad sometimes and other times not so much. I will try the drink you suggested and thankyou for your reply

Stinging Skin
by: Grandma

Hello Melanie,

Wow, it sounds like you have been going through a real ordeal over the past 6 months. I can honestly say you left no stone unturned as far as going the medical route. It seems nobody has answers for you and that can be so frustrating.

I'm not sure exactly where you're having this skin problem with burning, I'm assuming it's on your face because of your operation. I'd guess it's some kind of nerve damage although I don't think it's deep. The first thing I'd try is to squeeze a fresh lemon and mix the juice with some olive oil and heat it, just enough to make it warm, and massage it into the area you're having the problems. I'd do this several times a day. It will really improve your skin and also help with the nerve damage. I'd also try taking the the Vinegar and Honey Tonic everyday. This will help improve your PH balance in your skin. Sometimes having too much acid in your system can cause all kinds of weird things happen to your body. You can find the recipe for the tonic on the left column marked "Vinegar Tonic". If after trying this for a few weeks you don't notice any change I'd seek a natural health practioner in your area for advice. I would without a doubt try alternative medicine since the medical profession can't seem to find your problem. Just don't let anyone tell you this is all in your head, there's always a cause to symptoms like yours. The trick is finding the cause.

Stinging skin
by: melanie

Hi I,m a 52 yr old woman .Going through menopause.FSH was 110 at last test and no period for 10 months now. My problems started earlier this year .I had a terrible sinus infection and after many Antibiotics finally ended up having surgery to the sphenoid sinus to remove the blockage. That was May 3rd. Since about 10 days after that i got pretty ill and spent at least 3 month housebound and alot of that time in bed. My head felt aweful, like i was drunk.I began to get burning sensations and prickling sensations in my skin.My skin changed texture.(became very crepey looking) Saw a Neurologist and had the nerve conduction test. Turned out ok.I wanted a skin biopsy test but he saw no need for it.Many blood tests and exams later the Docs found nothing much to speak of. Ive had MRI's and CT scans of my head, all my organs tested ok.Blood work only revealed i was low in B12 (225) So i started the total B12 liquid and its coming up. Last test showed 575 and that was about 6 weeks ago. I feel somewhat better but still get this feeling of stinging skin and it really frightens me.Its sometimes constant. I get very afraid the Anesthetic from the surgery may have done soemthing to me..or is it menopause. I never feel totally well. i know you cant tell me for sure whats wrong.I,m just grabbing at straws i suppose. Thanks

Another Suggestion
by: Grandma

Hello S.J.C.,

You're very welcome. I suspected I was writing to a woman going through menopause. :) I'm so glad to know that you're trying the B-12 vitamins and the tea I suggested. Since I now know for sure you're a woman going through menopause I'd like to make another suggestion. Try adding yams to your diet. If you include yams to your meals a couple of times a week you'll be pleasantly surprised at the results as far as your menopause symptoms. I like to wrap the whole potato in foil and bake them, then I just add some butter and salt and pepper. They are packed with wonderful vitamins and minerals and believe it or not they will actually replace those hormones you're body is craving.

Thanks for letting me know that the soap helped with your restless leg syndrome. I was really tickled to read that today. It's gotten to be a bit of a contest in my home. Grandpa is forever finding the soap and I'm forever hiding it. It amazes me how much it's helped his leg cramps but he just won't admit it could work. He can be so stubborn at times but I take it all in stride and laugh it off.

Take care,

Grandma

Nerves
by: Anonymous

Dear Grandma,

Thank you so much!! I take a B complex vitamin and I start taking B12. I am a woman, 54 years old and in menopause. I take black strap molasses for anemia and I've had my thyroid checked and my Dr. says that it's ok. Prescription meds make me so drowsy the next morning that I raraley take them. I will also purchase the lemon balm tea. Many thanks!

SJC

PS, I've tried using the bar of soap for restless legs and it works wonderfully.

Home Remedies for Nerves and Skin Itch
by: Grandma

Hello S.J.C.,

It's so hard to help some of my visitors at times when I can't tell if I'm writing to a male or female and I have no idea what kind of tests you've had done.

My first thought here is that you are being treated for the symptoms and not the cause. Something is causing these problems for your body to react like this. The first thing I suspect is that you're lacking in B vitamins. B vitamins, especially B-12 is known as the nerve vitamin. I'd suggest you start taking B-12 and B-complex right away. I'd also suggest you take vitamin D to help with your immune system.

I realize you're looking for some instant relief for your skin and I'd suggest you start drinking some lemon balm tea. This tea is excellent for your nerves, it will help you sleep, and it's also good for your skin. You can apply it directly to your skin, where you're feeling that stinging itch, and let the area air dry.

You can read about lemon balm tea if you go to the medicinal tea area on this website. It will tell you how to prepare it and explain what it will help.

A product that I have fallen in love with is made by Neutrogena. It comes in a small pump bottle and it's called "Oil-free Moisture for Sensitive Skin". It isn't very expensive (about $10 to $13 for the bottle). I've used it many times for itchy areas of my skin, I even have Grandpa using it. We've used it for dry skin and also for insect bites that won't stop itching.

Because of the symptoms your are describing I'd suggest you get your thyroid checked. Another thought is hormone imbalance. You can treat your symptoms with so many products and ideas but you really will never get relief until you figure out what is causing these symptoms and get it treated.

Thank you for trusting in Grandma's Wisdom,

Grandma
