Definitly the magnesium..

i would icrease water intake...especially before retiring for bed

how many folks do you know who say they don't
want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll
have to get up during the night!!

Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this!
Interesting....... Something else I didn't know ... I
asked my Doctor why people need to urinate so
much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor -
Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when
you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the
lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it
is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is
easier. This then ties in with the last statement! I knew
you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins
out of your body, but this was news to me.

Correct time to drink water... Very Important.
From A Cardiac Specialist!

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes
its effectiveness on the body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps
activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal -
helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps
lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed -
avoids stroke or heart attack

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that
water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg
cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when
they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Cramps are NOT RLS
by: Donna

Why is my comment below dated for 8/1/2012? I have not commented on this web site for at LEAST 2 yrs. Sept is RLS Awareness Month, so let's just make sure that people do know the difference between RLS and plain old leg cramps.

500mg of magnesium for leg cramps
by: Anonymous

Grandma and Others, I suffered with cramps in my legs and feet for many many years until I was so aggravated I jumped on the internet and just typed in how I felt. The first google search came up and it sound just like if I had written it. She said try 500 mg of magnesium every 4-6 hours and I promise within 45 mintues of taking 5000mg of magnesium my legs slowed down with the cramping and moving and beating like a heart beat. I have taken it ever since, but I don't have to take it but once in a while when I feel it coming on I take 2 tablets and then take two more either the same night or the next morning. Rarely do I have to exceed this dose. I take it with me when I go spend the night with anyone I don't want to be without it. Try not to let your legs start cramping and get out of control because it will take longer for the magnesium to work. As soon as you feel it coming on take the 250 x 2 = 500mg. I suffered for so many years from this and I'm so greatful for this help. i hope you get relief too.

RLS and leg cramps
by: Donna

at least you have ssid her that rLS and leg cramps are not related at all. Period. Muscle cramps are muscle cramps, like those charlie horses that knot your legs up. This is definitely NOT RLS. As far as the "starneg home remedy" which is putting a bar of soap between the sheets in your bed, the jury will always be out on that one. We have ben discussing the "soap trick" for over 15 yrs in my goups. Out of over 4,000 people, I have 2 that use soap in the sheets, and they are not sure it helps at all, but will try anything. That is why one can read sites like this, but if you want some real RLS answers go to www.rlshelp.org (not the RLS foundation site, to be clear) An RLS expert maintains that site and he has been doing so since 1998. You can read what he says about soap, too. A chemist in my group says that there is no way "the soap molecules" are going to junp nto your legs and quiet them down as far as RLS. There are several levels of severity for rLS, and I can guarantee (alnost 100%) that soap is NOT going to help you in the least, partcicularly severe Primary RLS.

Remedy for Leg Cramps
by: Grandma

Hi,

As far as your leg cramps go, I'd suggest you try taking magnesium for awhile and see if that relieves your symptoms.

For the RLS, I did write a page about a strange remedy. It's really inexpensive and I've had email from people telling me it actually relieved their symptoms. It's worth a try. Just click on the button on the left, "Home Remedies" and scroll down until you see "Remedy for Restless Leg Syndrome".
