Getting rid of chipmunks - HELP!

by Linda
(Madison, WI USA)

The chipmunks have decided they like to come into my house and run around in the wall of my bedroom!...we've found one spot and reinforced the opening under the siding but I'm afraid there will just be more.

Fox urine - doesn't work
Mothballs - don't work

I'd like to use something that is "child" safe since I am also a grandma and love to have the granddaughters come and spend time here.

Any suggestions....we spent a fortune having a service trap and remove them last fall - can't afford that this year and can't afford to have the house completely resided either. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

barium carbonate is used as a rodent poison and harmful to humans. It is sometimes referred to as rat poison. Use with caution.

Critter Ritter for Chipmunks
by: Grandma

Hello Linda,

I totally understand you wanting something non-toxic to get rid of the chipmunks, the last thing you need is one of your grandchildren to get sick from some crazy formula to chase chipmunks.

The first thing I'd suggest is to buy some peppermint essential oil. Soak cotton balls in this oil and tuck them into the cracks and around the opening they are finding to get into your house. All rodents hate the smell of peppermint and they usually just pack up and leave the area once they get a whif.

I'd really hate to see you kill them, besides them being so cute they can also really make your house stink if they die inside your walls. But if you must, just sit a bowl of instant mashed potatoes near the opening they are getting in and a small bowl of water beside it. They can't resist the instant potatoes and will take a big drink after eating, this will swell their stomachs and cause them to burst. You could also try sticking tiny pieces of Juicy Fruit gum down in the area. They love the smell and can't resist eating it, it will clog up their intestines.

A good recipe for poison for rodents but very safe for human's is;

2 ounces of barium carbonate
1/2 ounce of granulated sugar
1/2 pound of bread crumps

You can place all these ingredients into a bowl and add a small amount of water and make into small balls. Then just spread the balls around the area.

To be honest, I'd just try the peppermint cotton balls first, it should just chase them away.
