Clean/Unclog sink drains with Vinegar & Baking soda

by Tina
(EHT New Jersey)

I have issues with my bathroom sink always clogging (Most likely due to my husbands little whiskers when he shaves.)

This is what I use.

3/4 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup White distilled Vinegar
2-3 quarts boiling tap water

I will pour 3/4 cup Baking Soda directly into the drain. Then pour 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar down the drain and quickly cover the drain with a drain blocker as the combination of the two will cause a volcanic type eruption. You want to keep that volcanic eruption in the drain so block it with a rag or sink drain cover. Allow the ingredients to agitate in the drain for a half hour. In the meantime, boil a pot of water (About three quarts) Once a half hour is up, remove the drain cover and slowly pour the boiling water into the drain.

This recipe also works great to clean greasy kitchen drains. I usually do the vinegar/baking soda recipe in each drain once a month.

Vinegar & Baking Soda Recipe
by: Grandma

Hi Tina,

Thank you so much for sharing your white vinegar and baking soda recipe for clogged sinks. I've used vinegar and I've used baking soda to get the smell out but never mixed them together to unclog a sink, mostly because of the foaming action. But I'm going to give it a try. I'm forever dealing with a clogged bathroom sink and yep, it's the old whiskers that are causing the clogging.
